Definition: smart city

An urban area that uses technology to provide high-tech services as well as more efficient services to the neighborhood. Wi-Fi hotspots are a prime example; however, traffic monitoring, bus/subway arrival notifications, streetlights that dim when nobody is nearby and escalators that operate only when people step on them are also examples. Amsterdam, Barcelona and Stockholm have been noted as some of the first smart cities in the world. See smart.
